Need Materials for Your Class?
“Transportation and the Shape Of Cities” could be also used as a textbook. This material grew out of classes authors Christof Spieler and Mandi Chapa taught at Rice University in Engineering and Architecture.
In engineering, this book represents a radically different approach than the highway-centric information common in introductory transportation classes.
In architecture, it could be part of a class that is missing from many curricula. It could also be a resource for students in design studios.
In planning, it fits well into a transportation or urban planning class.
It could also be used in classes in Political Science, Policy, and Public Administration.
To help anyone who wants to teach a course using this book, we’ve prepared materials. These include a full course syllabus, assignments, lecture slide decks, and three activities. Together, these could structure an entire course, but they are also well suited to picking and choosing whatever might be most useful. All are editable. The lecture decks include many of the diagrams and photos in the book, and are set up so this images could easily be pulled out and rearranged to use as needed. The activities include instructions, materials to print out, and slide decks for facilitation.
Some of these materials may also be useful for non-profits doing public workshops or transportation academies.
